Associate Recruitment & Retention

In addition to our summer clerkship program (see below), Kahn, Dees, Donovan & Kahn, LLP, also recruits third year law students and attorneys considering a lateral move. Each year, we hire attorneys who possess the intellect, personality, savvy, and character to practice at KDDK and who desire to make Evansville their home.

Our goal is to provide associates with the experience and training to effectively serve clients’ needs, participate in the community, and enjoy a satisfying career in the practice of law. We hire associates we believe are capable of attaining partnership, and strive to assist our associates in reaching this goal. To this end, each associate is assigned a partner to serve as his or her mentor. Mentors provide advice and guidance as needed to assist associates in achieving maximum success in professional and personal development.

KDDK associates are generally not assigned to practice solely in a specific area, but rather are given the opportunity to gain experience in a variety of matters while working with many different attorneys in the firm. As associates determine which practice areas they enjoy, they are encouraged to seek work and acquire expertise in those areas.

We maintain reasonable workload budgets for our associates. In addition, KDDK associates are encouraged to spend appropriate amounts of time on continuing legal education, professional and personal development, client development, and community activities. Most of our lawyers are active in the community and serve on one or two boards. We invite our associates to be themselves and contribute in their own way.

First year associates receive three month and six month performance reviews and all KDDK associates receive annual performance reviews evaluating strengths, weaknesses, and overall professional development.

Summer Clerkship Program

The firm’s summer clerkship program is one of our primary means for recruiting and hiring new associates. We offer paid summer clerk positions to first and second year law students who are at or near the top third of their class. Other factors such as work experience, participation in law review or moot court, and community involvement are also considered in evaluating candidates. We conduct on-campus interviews at several area law schools. Students from those schools may apply through their career placement office during the fall recruiting period. Applicants may also contact the firm directly.

The goal of the program is to give our clerks a broad range of legal experience to assist them in making informed career choices. We endeavor to provide summer clerks with a realistic view of what life as a full-time associate at KDDK would be like. Clerks have the opportunity to work on matters in various practice areas and with various attorneys throughout the firm. Our clerks conduct legal research; draft memoranda, briefs, pleadings, and other documents; and observe client meetings, depositions, mediations, arbitrations, and court proceedings. Clerks receive mentoring and constructive feedback on their work product throughout the summer. Our “open door” policy encourages frequent interaction with all attorneys. We also arrange a variety of social activities throughout the summer to allow clerks to become acquainted with our attorneys on a more personal level.
