Partner Chris Lee
Receives
James Bethel Gresham Freedom Award
KDDK partner Chris Lee was awarded the
James Bethel Gresham Freedom Award on April 28 at a dinner
celebrating the Evansville Bar Association’s 2006 Law
Day. The award honors people who have distinguished themselves
in activities or careers which have elevated respect for
the law, promoted freedom, or otherwise furthered the
ideals of the American justice system.
Chris founded the Afghanistan Relief
Fund while serving as a major in the Indiana Army National
Guard in Afghanistan last year. Assisted by comrades in
his battalion and supporters in Indiana, Chris founded
the organization to help the thousands of people in Afghanistan
who have little or nothing in the way of clothing, shelter,
food, personal hygiene supplies and medical care. Today
Chris continues fundraising efforts for the relief fund,
which now supports three orphanages, three hospitals,
several refugee camps and a school. Chris also was instrumental
in bringing his Afghan interpreter, 22-year-old A.J. Myakhel,
to the United States early this year to continue his education
at the University of Southern Indiana. His hope is that
a formal education will give A.J. — who speaks seven languages
but has been educated only under Taliban rule — the means
to assist his home country in achieving a true democracy.
“We know that many of our EBA members
have served honorable and distinguished military tours
of duty, and we’re grateful for their service,” notes
KDDK partner Brian Williams, 2001 recipient of the James
Bethel Gresham Award. “The firm is especially proud of
Chris for his service in both Bosnia and Afghanistan,
and for the real difference he made with the founding
of the Afghanistan Relief Fund. It’s been our privilege
to provide support to Chris and his family during his
tours of duty. He and his family have made a very big
sacrifice. Chris is very deserving of this award.”
A native of Bedford, Chris, his wife,
Laura, and three sons Nicholas, Joseph and Matthew reside
in Evansville. Chris joined Kahn, Dees, Donovan &
Kahn in 1998. He practices in the areas of commercial,
tort and mass litigation, insurance defense and product
liability litigation.
Evansville native James Bethel Gresham
is memorialized as the first enlisted American soldier
to die on the battlefield in World War I. The first James
Bethel Gresham Freedom Award was given to the Evansville
Fraternal Order of Police in 1959. Other recipients over
the decades have included Judge Addison Beavers (1968),
Mayor Russell Lloyd (1979), and the Volunteer Lawyer Program
of Southwest Indiana (2002).
