News Events of 1908
- Henry Ford produces his
first Model T automobile.
- The first major commercial
oil discovery is made in the Middle East, in Southwest
Persia.
- A long-distance radio message is
sent from the Eiffel Tower for the first time.
- Robert
Baden-Powell begins the Boy Scout movement.
- Women
compete in the modern Olympic Games for the first
time.
- The Bureau of Investigation, forerunner
of the FBI, is founded.
- The Child Labour Act of Ontario
is passed. Federal regulation of child labor was
not achieved in the
U.S. until 1938.
- Grand Canyon National
Monument is designated. It will become a National
Park in 1919.
- Frenchman Henri Farman pilots the
first passenger flight.
- William
Howard Taft defeats William Jennings Bryan in the
U.S. presidential
election.
- Future U.S. President
Lyndon B. Johnson is born.
- Mother’s Day is observed
for the first time at Andrew’s Methodist
Church in
Grafton, West Virginia.
