The KDDK Advantage

It’s
Summer, and the Living is Easy…Or Is It?
As we welcome the return
of warm weather and prepare for summer, we share the
following legal topics of interest.
Temporary Power
of Attorney Documents - For parents who plan to entrust their children
with other adult guardians
this summer — for example, if your summer plans involve
travel without your minor children, you should consider
using a “temporary power of attorney.” A temporary
power of attorney gives the appointed guardian the authority
to make decisions and oversee the health care and other
needs of your children younger than age 18 in the event
that an emergency arises while you are away. A temporary
guardianship can be created for any individual who
is
under your care to ensure that medical and other needs
are met in your absence.
Fence Requirements
for Swimming Pools - A six-foot impassable fence is required
around
swimming pools in accordance
with Evansville City Ordinance 15.153.020 and Vanderburgh
County Ordinance 17.12.060.
Air Quality and
Open Burn Bans - Summertime is a perfect time for outdoor fun
with friends and family, but to
make your time outdoors more enjoyable remember to
check the air quality conditions for our area before
planning
activities. Find air quality forecasts for Evansville
at www.vanderburghgov.org/Index.aspx?page=1670.
Because
the Federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently
lowered the ozone standard from 84 parts
per billion (ppb) to 75 ppb, the Evansville EPA has
predicted that the Evansville/Vanderburgh County region
will see
nearly six times the number of ozone exceedance days
than in comparison to those of the past several years.
For that reason it will be critical that individuals
in our region participate in ozone reduction efforts
such as conserving energy, limiting driving and avoiding
unnecessary idling to help reduce ozone emissions and
improve air quality.
While the use of gas and
charcoal grills is permitted during Ozone Alert days,
open burning
is prohibited.
If you wish to have a recreational fire on a non-Ozone
Alert day and you live within Evansville city limits
— or in Vanderburgh County up to four miles outside
of city limits — advance approval from the Evansville
EPA
is necessary. Call 435-6145 during normal business
hours to request approval.
